Causes of Colic
TEN COMMON CAUSES OF COLIC SYMPTOMS
-
Trapped gas in stomach
-
Trapped gas in intestinal tract
-
Reflux
-
Diaphragmatic spasm
-
Muscle spasm or spinal misalignment
-
Overfeeding or underfeeding
-
Allergy to cows milk or formula
-
Lactose digestive issues
-
Lack of deep sleep
-
Overstimulation
Because symptoms often overlap, it can be difficult to diagnose exact cause. For example:
1. Stomach colic
Stomach colic starts early and usually relates to feeding. This can be due to not latching nicely. Or gulping in air when feeding. Or tongue ties. Or not getting all the burps out.
-
Typically starts in weeks 1-2
-
Symptoms come soon after a feed
-
Baby can be hard to burp... feels like not all wind came out
-
Can be a fussy/furious feeder eg doesn't latch well, guzzles milk
-
Can have runny, milky reflux which comes up soon after a feed
** See Masterclass for help on all causes.
3 Stages of Colic
"Classic Colic" tends to go through 3 stages. The earlier you recognise what is happening and treat the cause (not just medicate!!) the sooner your baby will start to feel better.
